If breaking glass is the sound of progress...
then this may just be the start of a new era!
When we moved in we were cautious of the vacant house next to us. You've read my tales of squatters and giant rats and trying to get the place locked up. Matt has dealt with the housing office and we were told the owner had an injunction and had to begin rehab by May of this year or lose the house. Then we found out he got a bit of an extension but it doesn't sound like much of one because right now, as I type this, there are men DESTROYING the house next to us.
I was a little bit nervous that they weren't supposed to be in there, but as I peeked next door I saw that the lock had been opened, not physically removed by force. That's a good sign, right? There was a man upstairs hitting the windows with a hammer! I know that old windows can be hard to remove, but a hammer? Is that really necessary? That's not how Bob Villa does it! Of course, if you've watched any of his shows, you'll know that Bob doesn't actually do much of anything... he just watches other people do it. And he sells tools. Anyway, there was another man throwing stuff down the stairs. I guess it's time for the gut job. Or at least the pick up all the trash" job.
The noise is incredible though. I'm working from home today and it sounds like there is someone stomping around upstairs! They are doing something to the walls... maybe removing paneling? It's shaking our house a bit. I can totally put up with the noise, even the breaking glass, if this means we won't have to worry about the vagrants. Of course, I think this is intended to be a rental house, so they may well just be a different sort of vagrants.
I'm kind of mad knowing that the neighborhood association helped me pick up all the trash in that backyard last weekend and they are starting demo now. If I'd known it was going to start today, I would have left the mattress, the needles, and all the bones(!) for them to deal with. My neighbor is completely traumatized by all the bones she found. For a time she was convinced it was a crime scene, but I think we talked her down with explanations of rats and such.... though one of the bones was quite large... hmmm...
Anyway, hopefully this is an improvement. Only time will tell.
